Patent Granted: Preventing finger of a user from pinch in a door gap

Innovation Title:
Preventing finger of a user from pinch in a door gap.

Name and Age of Inventors (at the time of innovation):
Ayat Faizan (04)
Vihan Yerubandi (15)

Problem Statement:
The National Safety Council reports that more than 300,000 door-related injuries requiring emergency room treatment take place each year. Children, especially those under the age of four, suffer most door-related injuries that ultimately require amputation. There was a need for a system to prevent such an injury to young kids.

About the Innovation:
When 4-and-a-half-year-old Ayat mildly hurt her finger with a door pinch, she decided to take this problem head-on. She along with Vihan, another innovator from DiscoverSTEM developed an intelligent door jamming system that detects if there is any finger on the door frame. In the event any finger or hand is detected on the frame of the door, it jams the hinges to prevent injury to the fingers or hand.
